Hover
buttons are one of the least understood and stranger animals in
FrontPage. They DO cause problems!
On this page, we'll attempt to guide you
through some of the pitfalls and teach you how to add them.

First a couple of oddities.
 | Hover buttons will not work when imported from a
template unless you already have some in your web.
 | You can remedy that problem by deleting one and
then adding it back. We know this sounds strange but here's
why. |
 | Hover buttons need to "class" files to
make them work; fphover.class and fphoverx.class. When
FrontPage brings in a template, it does not check to see if hover
buttons exist on the page. It simply loads the page without
regard to what's on it. Therefore, it does not know hover
buttons exist and does not bring in the needed class files. |
 | The fix for this is to remove at least one of the
buttons, then put it back on the page, thus forcing FrontPage to
realize the class files are needed and to bring them into your
web. |
 | When redoing hover buttons in the above way, be
SURE to note the height and width before removing them.
You'll need to know that. See below for how to add a hover
button. |
|
 | The second strange thing about hover buttons is that
they tend to distort/mess up the dimensions of some of the cells
(usually the row height dimension) around them when used in a
template.
 | The fix for this is easy.
 | Simply highlight the row. |
 | Go to the cell properties |
 | Remove the height specification (note what it
is first) and uncheck the box. |
 | Reopen the cell property box. |
 | Type in the specification again and check the
box. |
|
 | We know this sounds like a tremendous pain in the
butt and it is! But, it's the only work-around we've found
that works (other than redoing the whole table and you DON'T
want to do that!!). |

How to add hover
buttons to pages
Adding hover buttons is really pretty easy once you get
the hang of it.
Simply go to: Insert|Component|Hover button
You'll see a dialog box. If you are not providing
graphics and you're going to let FrontPage create them, the options are
very straightforward. The only thing to keep in mind is that you DO
need to specify the height and width of the button. The default size
is rarely what you really want.
If you are supplying graphics for the hover button,
there's a couple of things to keep in mind.
 | Be SURE you specify the size!
 | Be sure the size is the same dimensions as the
graphic you are using or it could get pretty ugly...buttons cut in
half, too much gray space, etc. |
|
 | Be SURE to blank out the button text!
Otherwise that phrase will appear over your button (very unsightly). |
 | Be SURE to click the Custom... button and specify the
graphics to use. |
 | If you are going to use sound files for buttons
events (on click, on hover), be sure they are recorded in the .au
format and at a sample rate of 8000 (or pretty close). Otherwise
they will not play. |
As time goes on and we get more information on hover
buttons, we'll share it with you right here.
