After reading the information contained on this page, you still cannot get a template to work,
this method
is a sure-fire way to get the template to work!
| The following code is required to send a problem report to
us.
Code:
1002.
PLEASE
look through this FAQ before sending us a problem report.
Chances are, your question is already answered here.
Of course, we still get NUMEROUS questions that are already answered here. When that happens, will simply direct you back to this page. If this happens to you, please don't be upset. Save yourself (and us) an extra step...
Please CHECK THIS FAQ FIRST. |
To
add a page using a template:
 | Be sure you are in the FP Editor in FP98 and in PAGE
view on FP2000. If you're not, you will not be shown the
template option. |
 | Select File, New (in both versions of FP) then Page
(FP2000 only) |
 | You will be shown a list of templates. In the
case of the majority of our themes, be SURE you are on the Page tab in
FP98 and the General tab in FP2000. |
 | Click on the one you want to use and click OK. |
Quite often, themes will look really strange in the
editor or in page view (things will not look like they fit correctly or
are out of place). Don't worry! Look at the page with a
browser and you will see that they look just fine.
After
I add a page with a template, I don't see any navigation
(buttons,/banners/etc.) or it says the
feature is not available. Why?
 | This is due to the fact that you have not yet added
the page to the navigation structure of your web.
FrontPage (both versions) build navigation structures
dynamically. This means that until you add the page to the
structure of your site's navigation, FP does not know what buttons,
banners, etc. to build for you. As soon as you add the page to
the web structure, you will see these elements in page view (or the
editor in FP98).
BTW, this is why with large webs (lots of
pages) it takes so long for FP to update the web structure. It's
actually creating all of the graphical elements for ALL of the pages
that need them.
Caveat: When you only have one
page (like when beginning a new web), even after adding the page in
the navigation view, you will still not see any navigation
buttons. This is due to the fact that there is nothing to
navigate to yet. After you add the second page and place it in
the navigation, you will see the buttons. |
I just purchased a
theme with a template and can't find the template. Where is it?
 | Depending on your version of FrontPage:
 | In FrontPage 98, it's on the Page tab when you choose
File/New in the editor (see "FYI" below for more
info) |
 | In FrontPage 2000, it's on the General tab when you
select File/New/Page when in Page View. |
|
 | In both cases, be sure you are looking for the correct name
(they are in alphabetical order and with a long list of themes, it can
sometimes be difficult. In our
case, all of our templates start with "KEP". So, for
example, instead of looking for "FS Blue", you would look
for ours as "KEP FS Blue". |
 | FYI:
Templates in FrontPage 98 (see below for FP2000) must be located in a directory
(folder) called Pages which is located under the directory where you
installed FP. If you did not select the default directory when
you initially installed FP, you may have to manually move the template
directory.
 | If you do have to move it, here's the procedure:
 | Search for the directory that the new template was
installed into. To do this, search for "kep*.tem"
(do not use the quotes). |
 | When you find it/them, move them to the Pages directory
under the directory where FP98 is installed. |
 | If you are running FP98 at the time, CLOSE IT. |
 | Next time you open FP98, you will see the template. |
|
|
 | In FP2000, templates must be located in:
 | WINDOWS\Application
Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Pages\kep*.tem
(all of our themes start with kep, then the theme name
(abbreviated) and a ".tem"). |
 | You may use the same procedure
as above to move a template. |
|
 | In some cases, if some MS software has been installed on your machine prior to installing FrontPage (MS Office being the most notable), it will change where themes and templates are installed. In these cases, you should use the above procedures and move the template and/or theme directories to where the existing ones are located. |
 | In FrontPage 2002, templates should be located in:
 | \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\Pages
|
|
 | In FrontPage 2003,
templates should be located in:
 | \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\Pages11

I am trying to create
a web from scratch and can't find the template to create it.
 | We do not include WEB templates with
most of our themes; only PAGE templates.
 | We do this because most web templates
we've seen create a bunch of pages you don't really want
anyway and they really don't make creating a web much
easier than a page template. |
 | Additionally, if you forget to remove an
unnecessary page, your site looks pretty foolish with a
page devoted to someone else's pet (especially when your
site is selling a product). |
|
I am using the Create New
Web option and can't find a template to use with the theme I just bought.
 | This is because, to date, we have never done a web
template. We only supply PAGE templates with our themes.
 | We realize that some people do create new webs
using a theme they just purchased. We tried the same thing
in the past (before we started doing themes) using a web
template. Honestly, we HATED it.
 | We hated the fact that we forgot to remove
the page we did not wish to use and they were included in the
web we published. It really looks pretty stupid for a
business website to have a page devoted to "my
pets". Of course, that was our fault for not
getting rid of the page but, like most beginners, we didn't
know any better. We don't want that to happen to anyone
else. |
 | We found it more work to get rid of the extra
pages or change their titles. The page title is
especially easy to forget because it's not readily accessible
in FrontPage. Nothing instill more confidence than a
page about how great your work is and how much attention to
detail you pay with a page heading of "My Vacation
Pictures". |
|
 | So, for the above reasons and a few more we won't
bore you with, we do not do WEB templates; only PAGE templates. |
|
The page is too wide and I can't seem to get it to re-size.
 | This is probably due to one of two things (which are actually the same thing)
 | 9 times out of 10, this happens on the top level page (index or default.htm) of your web. it's due to the fact we include the navigation structure for the next/back/etc. buttons at the bottom of most pages. If it's not being used (due to no other pages being on the same level), FP tends to stretch the template. Simply delete the back/next/etc. placeholder text at the bottom of the page.
|
 | This can also occur if you have too many top level pages. You can do one of three things.
 | Decrease the number of top level pages.
|
 | Delete the top level navigation structure (be sure to place filler.gif in the table cell after deleting the structure or Netscape will show a blank area)
|
 | Change the table cell property to allow the buttons to wrap by removing the check from the No Wrap box in the table cell property setting. IMPORTANT: in most of our themes, the area where the top level buttons are will not look right if you do this because the area is made to only be high enough to accommodate one row of buttons. Only in a few of our templates will this procedure yield the desired results.
